Friday Five

Happy first day of June – to the summah!

1. I’M WATCHING: The buzz build up surrounding the NYC ban on sugary drinks. USA Today has a must read. I must say the “idea” sounds good, but I also believe it’s the people’s choice. This is a big step from the government and the general consensus seems to be that it’s an unwanted one. A few comments catching my eye:

  • Coca-Cola issued a statement: “New Yorkers expect and deserve better than this. They can make their own choices.”
  • A McDonald’s statement said “public health issues cannot be effectively addressed through a narrowly focused and misguided ban.”
  • Samantha Hershkowitz,”What’s the next step?” she says. “Are you going to ban candy in movie theaters?”

2. I’M READING: Snippets from mega Triathlete Chrissie Wellington’s new book, A Life Without Limits. I don’t think you have to be a triathlete to appreciate Chrissie’s dedication and all around domination of Ironmans. I def want to read more, I’d like to understand what the mental state of such an elite athlete is like. Check out what Chrissie says about her book:

3. I’M PINNING: If anybody follows me on Pinterest, I’m sorry. I will probably post about 10 dessert recipes and then 10 workout tips, haha. Moderation people! I went a little overboard this week with my love for Lululemon.

4. I’M LISTENING TO: The Fighter: Gym Class Heroes Featuring Ryan Tedder

5. I’M NOSHING ON: Freezer pops. Remember Otter Pops?? We bought some for the weekend, and holy bring me back to my childhood!

  1. That’s fascinating about NYC. I didn’t hear about it, but I’ll be following the story now!
    You know how I feel about Chrissie; let me know if/when you read the book! And I agree, you don’t have to be a triathlete, or even an athlete, to appreciate all she has accomplished.
    I think my fave hot day treat is an Itzakadoozie. So refreshing!

    • I was a huge fan of the menu with calorie listings that NYC started.

      Yes, you definitely had me looking into the book, there is something there for anyone looking to be, well, better!

  2. Per usual, we seem to be on the same music wavelength. 🙂

    I’m not sure about my feelings towards the ban. I really wish companies themselves (errr… fast food places, 7Eleven, etc), would do a little more on their own about it. Such as downsizing drink sizes or whatnot. The government is only trying to take on the health-related responsibilities they have to the customer that they are sort of ignoring.

    • Great point, they shouldn’t have to wait for gov’t intervention. It’s also a matter of educating people as well I guess, so much needs to be done!

  3. I thought it interesting that NY would ban the large soda drinks but it is still ok to buy beer in the same size. UMM.. Maybe we just make people pay a tax for every lb you weigh.:)

  4. Might have to pick up that book! Triathlete or not (uh, not), it’s always inspiring to read from the mind of an elite. I’ve read almost all of Dean K’s books, Lance’s “Not about the Bike” (eh, okay but not great) & a handful of other testimonies to the sport. They rarely disappoint, and always put an interesting perspective in place! Mental > physical. Get your head in the game, and stay strong.

    NYC, whether or not a consumer ‘needs’ 32 oz of anything besides water is not the point. Nutrition beliefs aside, I’m with the people on this one!

  5. freezer pops! YES!! I used to love those! What kind do you get? (can’t read that label, wasn’t sure if those were the ones you got). Can never find any good ones now that aren’t TOTALLY sugar laden 😉 happy belated weekend! (this posted to my reader really late for some reason?? like today?)

  6. I look forward to hearing more about the book…it would be interesting to know how the elites do it! Chrissie was actually at the San Diego RnR Expo, but I missed her 😦 I feel like I pin the exact same way! At least adding a little of each you even it out 😉
